RECENT EVENTS

While individual volunteers were logging hundreds of hours in support of our Christmas programs, numerous organizations and corporations also pitched in to help in their own unique ways.

Sam’s Club donated over 400 turkeys to seniors and families at The Salvation Army's Cedar Crest Community Center in Oak Cliff. The crowd was also excited to see former Dallas Cowboys players Charles Haley, Doug Dennison, and Russell Maryland help distribute the turkeys to seniors and families.

The University of Texas at Dallas launched a food drive last fall benefitting our Salvation Army community center in Plano. UTD delivered the food to our Plano location in mid December. In addition to the food drive, the university also donated bicycles to families served by our community center in Plano.

Just before serving meals to residents at our Carr P. Collins Social Service Center in December, employees from Bank of America presented a check for $12,100 benefitting our food assistance program. The donation is part of Bank of America's Feeding the Hungry community initiative.

The Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts, and the PGA Tour recently made a grant of $2,000 to support services at our Mabee Social Service Center in Fort Worth. Meanwhile, GE Capital presented us with a check for $10,000 to support therapeutic and educational activities at our Carr P. Collins Social Service Center in Dallas.

Earlier this month, Hanes donated 500 pairs of socks to our homeless shelter in Dallas. The socks were donated as part of Hanes’ 3rd Annual Virtual Sock Drive, which benefits those served by Salvation Army homeless shelters.

DOING THE MOST GOOD LUNCHEON – 11/11/11

This year’s “Doing The Most Good Luncheon,” presented by AT&T, raised more than $3 million, benefitting programs serving thousands in the Metroplex.

Keynote speaker Scott O’Grady, a former U.S. Air Force pilot, spoke of his experience being shot down over Bosnia and parachuting to the ground. He survived for six harrowing days in enemy territory before being rescued.

We thank Luncheon Chair Mark Schortman, Underwriting Chair Jan Pickens, and everyone involved in making this year’s luncheon a success.

ANGEL TREE

We’re pleased to announce that every child and special-needs adult in the Angel Tree program will receive gifts this Christmas! Last Friday, we began distributing gifts to over 50,000 underprivileged children and special-needs adults.

We’re grateful to all that adopted Angels this Christmas season, as well as the volunteers that are distributing the gifts to Angel Tree families.

RECENT EVENTS

Volunteers have been active this holiday season. Members of The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary in Dallas helped pack candy bags to be given as Christmas gifts to inmates locked up in prisons across Texas. Each candy bag also includes a gospel tract that shares the plan of salvation to lead people to a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Due to their annual Thanksgiving Day game, The Dallas Cowboys served up an “early” Thanksgiving meal at The Salvation Army’s Carr P. Collins Social Services Center. Cowboys players donated their time to serve dinner to more than 200 less fortunate men and women at The Salvation Army’s homeless shelter in Dallas. Brill Garrett, wife of Cowboys' head coach Jason Garrett, and the wives of some of the players also pitched in to help.

The Cowboys continued showing their holiday spirit. The team hosted a Christmas party for children served by our centers in the Metroplex. The children enjoyed food and fun at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Each child also received a brand new pair of TOMS shoes that they decorated and painted to their liking.

Meanwhile, the players’ wives held their annual Dream Drive for The Salvation Army at Sam’s Club in Grapevine. The players’ wives went on a shopping spree benefitting 20 underprivileged families served by The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army has been blessed with individuals who walk the walk. Sadly, we have lost such an individual.

Charles Wyly

On August 7^th, Charles Wyly passed away in Aspen, Colorado. As a past chairman of the DFW Metroplex Advisory Board and a member for more than 40 years, his commitment to The Salvation Army was nothing short of remarkable. Charles was instrumental in pushing forward The Salvation Army DFW’s long range plan, initiated in 2003. He was also a member of The Salvation Army's National Advisory Board where he served as treasurer.

We are grateful for the time we’ve spent working with Charles. We ask that you join us in praying for comfort for his wife, Dee, and for his family.

What makes this event unique? From 7 AM to 7 PM on Thursday, September 15^th, the Communities Foundation of Texas, sponsors of the event, will match a portion of your contribution.

Many showed their commitment to the community this summer. Former NFL Guard Ruben Brown kicked off a 7,000 mile, cross-country motorcycle ride called “Ruben’s Run.” The ride’s objective was to build awareness and raise funds for The Salvation Army. Ruben stopped in the Metroplex on July 25th and made time to visit with those we serve.

When our 15 Cooling Stations were running low on bottled water during the triple digit heat wave this summer, Sam’s Club took the initiative to donate 40,000 bottles of water to benefit the stations.

Back-to-school shopping can be very costly. Knowing this, the Office Depot Foundation and the Women’s Auxiliaries of Dallas and Fort Worth donated 1,150 backpacks to children served by The Salvation Army.

Volunteers from Boeing and Southwest Airlines recently served the community by hosting food drives benefiting Salvation Army food pantries across the Metroplex.

Other volunteer activities this month included two field days at our Pleasant Grove and Waxahachie locations. Summer day camp children throughout the Metroplex enjoyed activities such as face painting, tug-of-war, and basketball.

Ex-Dallas Cowboys Host Character Camp at The Salvation Army - Cedar Crest

Former Dallas Cowboy greats Charles Haley, Michael Irvin, Russell Maryland, Nate Newton, and the Pro Players Foundation, hosted a one-day Character Camp for children served at The Salvation Army Cedar Crest.

Remembering Charles Wyly

Dear Friends,

Few were as active in developing the future of The Salvation Army as Charles Wyly.

While serving as a member and former chairman of the local Salvation Army Advisory Board for more than 40 years, Charles was also a member of The Salvation Army's national advisory board where he had served as Treasurer. He was part of the Executive Committee, Financial & Institutional Development Committee, Business Administration Committee and, most recently, the Underwriting Committee for the 2011 Annual Doing the Most Good Luncheon, as well as the Performing Arts and the Long-Range Plan Committees.

In 2003, Charles was instrumental in securing a $3.5 million grant from the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Fund of the Communities Foundation of Dallas to provide three years of funding to support the implementation of a strategic long-range plan for The Salvation Army in Dallas.

Sadly, Charles died in an auto accident in Aspen Colorado, on Sunday, August 7^th.

We have lost one of the truly great gentlemen of the world in Charles Wyly. He cared for and shared with the poorest among us. I never felt ill at ease about speaking to this billionaire who so humbly wanted to make sure everyone who came through the doors of The Salvation Army had a place to sleep and good food to eat.

Charles was about the future. What could The Salvation Army do to help more? How could we serve better? How could we raise more money to help the poor? And in that, he led by example. The passing of Charles Wyly is a blow to the caring community of Dallas and Fort Worth.

Our wish is for others to join us in prayers of comfort for Charles’ wife Dee, and the Wyly family.

A dynamic and celebrated philanthropist, Charles dedicated his time and financial resources to charitable causes as varied as education, the arts, social services, health care, and human rights.

His legacy is one of both service and humility.

Leadership Blog: A Solid Foundation, 146 Years in the Making

Few organizations can claim to be in existence for more than a century. Yet on July 5^th, The Salvation Army celebrated its 146th Anniversary!

We are proud of the opportunities The Salvation Army has given to countless communities throughout the world. 146 years later, The Salvation Army’s community-wide efforts continue, as illustrated by our immediate response to the stifling heat in North Texas.

The DFW Metroplex is closing in on 30 consecutive days of triple-digit heat. The dangers of such high temperatures, including dizziness and heat strokes, are to be taken seriously. Preventive measures, such as proper hydration and remaining in cool areas, must be taken.

Many, however, don’t have the means to beat the heat.

Earlier this summer, The Salvation Army opened 15 cooling stations across the Metroplex. These stations provide visitors cool beverages and snacks in a well air conditioned facility. Two cooling stations, the Carr P. Collins Center in Dallas and the Mabee Center in Fort Worth, are open seven days a week.

Members of the community have recognized the importance of our programs amidst the strong heat surge. The First United Methodist Church of Hurst donated water, Gatorade and Girl Scout cookies towards our summer heat relief and youth programs. The church was so determined in assisting us that it donated enough items to fill a 14 foot trailer!

The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation mobilized members of its day camp to assist The Salvation Army at our feeding program in Lewisville, serving snow cones, beverages, and food to those in the program.

Speaking of our Lewisville feeding program, participants in the program will soon enjoy fresh produce grown in organic gardens located in the Upper Trinity Regional Water District.

Yet, The Salvation Army’s 146 year history goes beyond providing food and water to the least of these. It strives to play a positive role in the development of adults and children alike.

Whether it is providing complimentary hearing, vision, and blood pressure exams through its health awareness block party, hosting the United Way’s “Day of Action” for children, or attending (former Dallas Maverick) Josh Howard’s Basketball Camp, The Salvation Army at Cedar Crest plays an effective role in the lives of its community.

The Salvation Army’s founder, William Booth, once said “…it is not enough to give a man a better wage or a better job, or a better house only – you must show him how he may be given a new heart with the will and the character to match it.”

This principle has made The Salvation Army unique among its peers. Our solid foundation would not exist without the support we have received from thousands of people throughout the world.

Leadership Blog: Summertime and the Youth

Dear Friends,

Despite the scorching heat—a staple of North Texas summers—the past couple of weeks were full of memorable moments; from the celebration of National Doughnut Day at Krispy Kreme, to the Dallas Mavericks Victory parade where thousands of thirsty fans cooled off with water and Gatorade provided by The Salvation Army and the Dallas Police Department.

Ethan Winters began the summer creating memories with his grandfather, Major Ernest Branscum, when serving cool beverages to hundreds of fans during the Dallas Mavericks victory parade.

Many of our fondest childhood memories occurred during the summertime: trips to the pool, playing with friends, picnics, enjoying time with family, and so much more. The Salvation Army understands how important a carefree season of fun can be to the overall development of children.

We also recognize the important contributions children make to our community.

Take the initiative of 5^th grader Bradford Bonsack, from Westlake Academy. After learning that residents of the Carr P. Collins Social Services Center, in Dallas, were lacking in jeans, Bradford began a successful jeans drive. So successful was this drive that, in one weekend, Bradford managed to gather three 42 gallon bags of jeans and raised $250.00 to benefit The Salvation Army.

Another very impressive initiative came from the students of the Episcopal School of Dallas. These students, led by their respective student councils, initiated multiple fund raisers that culminated in a $1,000 donation to The Salvation Army. The students also conducted food and clothing drives on our behalf.

And on the subject of fond childhood memories, the children of The Salvation Army at Pleasant Grove soccer team will not forget the camaraderie they shared as they celebrated another exciting season.

Yet, in the midst of this, we should remember the many children who are not as blessed.

Our brothers and sisters in Alabama, Missouri, Arizona and Texas are suffering the effects of devastating tornadoes and dangerous wildfires. Those who survived are now using the summer as a time for recovery.

We urge you to cherish the moments you have with your loved ones, as such moments are not guaranteed. We also urge you to aid the youth in dire times. These young boys and girls will soon be the leaders of our community. They merit our investment.

Realizing this, The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of Dallas, allocated $368,597 from this year's Fashion Show for Salvation Army locations throughout the Metroplex. Aiding these locations is essential in providing support for children in our community.

benefiting The Salvation Army's Cooling Station.

In response to the dangers of 100-degree plus weather, Tom Thumb and Wal-Mart donated hundreds of cases of water to our cooling stations across the Metroplex. These stations provide children and adults relief from the stifling heat.

No amount of words can truly express our thanks for their initiative in aiding the least of these.

Dear Friends,

We continue to be impressed with the hard work of our volunteers and staff.
Their efforts continue to positively affect thousands of North Texans.

As you may know, thousands of people have been affected by strong wildfires across Texas. Many more had their lives take an unforeseen turn when tornadoes hit the Southeast U.S.

Our volunteers immediately stepped up to the plate by helping out in anyway they could; whether it be providing meals to residents and firefighters, or giving pastoral support for those trying to fight their circumstances.

We couldn’t be prouder of our volunteers and staff. These men and women have consistently addressed the task at hand, no matter how big or small the challenge may be.

The energy they put forth during the Annual Luncheon in Fort Worth on March 10^th was just spectacular. Both volunteers and our staff ensured the event ran smoothly, and was enjoyed by more than 300 in attendance.

The luncheon, chaired by Michele Reynolds, included appearances from the Honorable Mike Moncrief, Mayor of Fort Worth, and TOMS Shoes’ founder Blake Mycoskie. Mayor Moncrief and Blake reminded all of us of the impact we, as individuals and as a community, can have on the less fortunate.

This same sentiment was evidenced during the KaBOOM! playground build, on March 11, at our Cedar Crest community center. The compassionate energy displayed by more than 300 volunteers who selflessly gave hours of their time to build a brand new playground for the children of the Cedar Crest community was inspiring.

It was that same energy and compassion that led hundreds of North Texans to Cowboys Stadium, on April 5, for the TOMS Shoes’ One Day Without Shoes event. Attendees walked around the stadium barefooted to raise awareness of the millions of children around the world who are at risk for infection and disease by not having shoes to wear.

That same day, more than 125 children from various Salvation Army DFW Corps locations participated in the “Style Your Sole” party hosted by TOMS Shoes and the Dallas Cowboys inside Cowboys Stadium. The children received a natural canvas pair of TOMS shoes to decorate in whichever way they chose. Once they finished decorating their shoes, each child was able to keep them to wear and enjoy. In following TOMS’ “one-for-one” model, for every pair of shoes donated to the children participating in the party, a second pair was donated to another child in need.

It's important to remember that such successful efforts take time. We, as an organization, must persevere in achieving our mission.

You might say Melvin Traylor knows a thing or two about perseverance. On April 9, Mr. Traylor, Director of The Salvation Army Casa Youth Shelter, was inducted into the African American Education Archives and History Hall of Fame. He was recognized for his 49 years of commitment to the education of Dallas-area children. This commitment continues today through his work at the Casa Emergency Youth Shelter.

We encourage you to enjoy the smaller things in life. Be a blessing to another individual, family, or our community. As always, we offer you the opportunity to put your compassion into action through The Salvation Army. We shape the path our community travels.

We’re Back!

Dear Friends of The Salvation Army,

Welcome to our first blog post of 2011. By now, you’re probably savoring our beautiful warm and sunny North Texas weather. Be sure to make time to enjoy it!

As it has been a bit since our last blog, we’d like to touch on a few events starting with Christmas 2010, a holiday season full of joy and surprise.

The holiday season kicked off with the official opening of the Angel Tree program the day after Thanksgiving. The announcement mobilized hundreds of volunteers at our various Christmas Centers, who ensured that all the gifts bought by compassionate donors went straight to the people who needed them.

There’s nothing better than seeing a large contingent of folks coming together for a common good!

As the Christmas season wound down, 2011 ushered itself in!

On January 20^th, NFL Environmental and The Salvation Army hosted several school districts and private schools for an event titled Super Kids – Super Sharing. The event combined efforts from private and public schools to bring supplies, books, and athletic equipment to schools and agencies in need across North Texas.

The NFL didn’t stop there. On February 3^rd, the NFL YET was formerly announced. Through a $2 million donation from NFL Charities and the Gene and Jerry Jones foundation, a “Youth Education Town” is being created. This new program will result in expansion, renovation, and new programming at The Salvation Army Community Center in Arlington.

So far this year, on multiple occasions, our community youth have stepped up to the plate.

Lastly, children from The Salvation Army at Cedar Crest joined Dallas Cowboys player DeMarcus Ware in reciting excerpts of the Declaration of Independence on national television prior to Super Bowl XLV.

Each of these groups has aided The Salvation Army in addressing the needs of our community.

Yet, our mission is not done. There are still thousands of people in need of our help; families that need assistance; children who need our services; communities searching for the best solutions to their biggest problems.

We cannot do it without you. We encourage you to be willing and ready to aid those that are less fortunate. It is what we are called to do as children of our creator.

We hope you had a wonderful month of March! Next month, we will feature highlights about the Annual Doing the Most Good Luncheon in Fort Worth and the Cedar Crest KaBOOM! Playground build.

Getting to know them, getting to know all about them...

If you have ever “adopted” an Angel tag from one of our Angel trees - in your workplace or at a mall - you may have wondered how the name of that child ended up on the tag. Here is how it came to be that we asked you to provide eight year old “Cara” with a coat, a Hannah Montana game, and other gifts. (To protect confidentiality this is a composite of a typical family receiving Christmas assistance)
Cara is an eight year old girl. She lives in Dallas County with her mom, dad, and 3 year old brother. She attends a school near one of The Salvation Army Corps Community Centers. Her dad, Daniel, works in a warehouse; and her mom, Lydia, works part time cleaning houses. Some days her little brother Danny is a huge pest, other days she loves him to death – most days both are true simultaneously.

A few weeks ago the counselor at Cara’s school was invited to send some families to the nearest Salvation Army center to apply for Christmas assistance. As a result, the counselor sent home a “referral appointment slip” for Lydia to go to the Salvation Army last Tuesday morning at 10 AM. The form outlined the documents and other information Lydia should bring with her. On that morning Lydia was seated with other mothers at one side of the Salvation Army center’s gymnasium, until her name was called.

At 10:30 “Trina” asked Lydia to come to her interview station. After a few minutes of introduction and explanation of the process, Trina began to fill out the application form. She looked at Lydia’s ID, and filled in the name, address, phone number and other basic information.

Then it was time to dig into the details of Daniel and Lydia’s finances. Trina learned that Daniel worked in a warehouse and made $11/hour; and that Lydia had a part time cleaning job that brought in $50/day for about 3 days each week. A particular challenge for the family at this time of year is that the business Daniel works for is seasonal in nature. He works full time in the spring and early summer, but his hours are often shorter in the fall and winter. At best, the family income is around $2,400/month. This puts them well over the Federal Poverty Guideline for a family of their size - $1837/mo - which means they are not eligible for many government benefit programs.

Trina then asked Lydia to do her best to document their household expenses.

• Lydia pays a neighbor lady $15 a day to take care of Danny on the days that she is working.

• The family spends $162 each month for monthly bus passes. They save quite a bit since they don’t have the costs of a car payment, insurance, gas, etc.; but it does limit their employment opportunities since they can only work at places on a bus or train line, and on schedules that fit with public transportation.

• Lydia estimates that she spends around $600 each month at the grocery store. This means she is a very careful shopper, since this is less than the amount expected for a family of that size ($668/mo to $755/mo).

• As for most families, the largest expense is housing; rent/mortgage plus essential utilities such as electric, water, gas, etc. Rent used to be a little lower, but as Danny has gotten older they felt they needed to have a three bedroom apartment so he had his own room rather than sleeping in the living room. For Lydia’s family these expenses are now $1,100/mo. (this is over 40% of their budget, which puts them in a hardship category)

• Neither Daniel nor Lydia’s employers provide health insurance, so the family tries to rely on free clinics or the county ER (emergency room). However, Danny has issues with asthma and they often spend over $350/month on care and medications.

Doing the math on income and expenses Trina determines that Lydia’s family is truly in need; so she gets to go to the next step; the fun step – being one of Santa’s elves who makes “the list”. Young Danny needs a twin comforter for his new bedroom; and he’s got a real fixation on Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story. Cara has grown like a little weed in the past two years and really, really needs a new coat; and she is a huge Hannah Montana fan. Trina also enters information on all their clothing sizes, in hopes that an Angel sponsor will provide some of those needs as well. Danny is constantly running around and is so hard on his shoes and socks. Trina’s school wants kids to be in khaki and navy uniforms.

And that is how it came to be that you saw Cara’s tag hanging on an Angel Tree, asking for a coat and a Hannah Montana game. But it didn’t end there. Before Lydia left, Trina gave her some handouts about other programs at the Salvation Army center – after school tutoring, summer day camp, Sunday School, a soccer team, and a planned music and performing arts program.

Hi! I’m Pat Reimann, Christmas Assistance Coordinator for The Salvation Army DFW Metro Command. This is the first of several blogs I’ll be posting throughout the season. Is there anything you’ve always wanted to know about our Christmas program? Post a comment, and I’ll try to include it in future posts.

Just a few weeks ago we were still “enjoying” summer’s heat, and sticky humidity - challenging the notion of the “official” start of fall. Even so, The Salvation Army DFW Christmas Assistance Program jumped ahead into the deep end of everybody’s favorite winter holiday. At both the Dallas and Ft. Worth Christmas Centers, over 50 Salvation Army officers, staff and volunteers came together for training sessions on how to register an expected 18,000 families for Christmas assistance through the Angel Tree program and toy drives.

Trainees learned how to assess each individual applicant’s eligibility. Many also attended computer lab sessions to learn how to enter data so that donors would have the best and most accurate possible information on each child’s or senior’s sizes, needs, and wishes on each Angel Tree tag. Everybody received application forms, information sheets, and a DVD about Salvation Army programs that can be shown in their waiting areas. All of this training and preparation began to pay off on Monday, September 27; when the first families arrived at one of 15 Salvation Army centers to apply for Christmas assistance. This family registration effort will wrap up on November 5th.

Meanwhile, in the background, we have already been organizing and planning with the tens of thousands of generous donors who will be buying gifts for nearly 60,000 children and special care adults. We are finalizing agreements with ten local malls who will allow their shoppers to adopt Angels at one of our trees. Numerous companies, churches, schools and other organizations have already committed to adopting Angels, and we hope to enlist many, many more. Early bird volunteers are signing up to do the “heavy lifting” of receiving, sorting, and organizing gift bags; and some have even signed up for “special duty” as bell ringers in order to have an impact far beyond the Christmas season.

• How does a family get their gifts – are they delivered to the family, and who does that?

Goo Goo Dolls Fans Donate Food

If you've been to a Goo Goo Dolls concert, then you know they encourage their fans to "Give a Little Bit" to the less fortunate by collecting food donations before their shows.

On Saturday, members of the Goo Goo Dolls Street Team (super-dedicated fan club members), collected food items for The Salvation Army at Superpages.com Arena in Dallas. Street Team members came from Austin, San Antonio, Lubbock, and even New York!

And there was an incentive for concert goers to donate: The person who gave the most food would get to meet the band before the show. That honor went to C.J. from San Antonio for 512 food items.

Former Pro-Football Players Brave the Heat to Raise Funds

What sport are former pro-football players more passionate about than any other?

Football? Nope. Try golf.

That's why a whole passel of them turned out at the Dallas Cowboys Golf Course on Tuesday to play in the 100-degree heat. OK, so it was 98 degrees. It was still hot.

Five-time Super Bowl winner Charles Haley enlisted his friends to play in a scramble to benefit The Salvation Army's Cedar Crest Community Center in Oak Cliff.

Players included Tim Brown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), John Randle (Minnesota Vikings), Barry Foster (Pittsburgh Steelers), and former Dallas Cowboys Chad Hennings, Rocket Ismail, Preston Pearson, Rayfield Wright, and Larry Brown, just to name a few. Ronnie Lott (San Francisco 49ers) flew in all the way from San Francisco to participate!

Dallas Cowboys greats Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Darren Woodson, Jay Novacek, and Russell Maryland also made guest appearances.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary in Dallas distributed backpacks of school supplies to 350 children being served by 12 Salvation Army centers in the DFW Metroplex.

Each backpack will contain paper, crayons, color pencils, water colors, a spiral notebook, glue, scissors, pencils, glue sticks, and a supply box!

Summer Day Camp

If you visit The Salvation Army Arlington Community Center you will hear the sound of music echoing through the hallways. This summer, they are offering music lessons each day for their summer day camp children.

If you are envisioning music tutorials taught by using chalk boards or studying sheet music for hours, you are wrong.

Forget teaching styles of the past; the center’s teaching technique is far from traditional.

The center has tuned into using technology to help teach music to their young clients.

Helping the children fine tune their music skills is Jeff Barrington, Salvation Army Arlington Community Center Music Director.

Barrington remarks on how his teaching method has changed in order to keep up with the times.

“Kids live in a high-tech world,” Barrington says. “We use Music Ace Maestro and Smart Board which are geared to teach children about music. It is a great interactive tool—gets children interested and makes learning fun,” Barrington said.

When best friends Reghan Barnett and Rebecca Hill heard about The Salvation Army's emergency food pantry depletion, they were eager to help.

With an entrepreneurial spirit, the girls set up a lemonade stand in their Lake Highlands neighborhood. And within 2 hours they raised $60!

"Some people even gave more than 50 cents when we told them the money was going to The Salvation Army," Reghan said.

Last Tuesday morning, they came by The Salvation Army DFW office to drop off their donation...

Recently, we celebrated four individuals who went from being homeless to now having their very own homes.

This accomplishment was far from easy for our clients. They have worked so hard, sacrificed so much, and come so far that it is only fitting that we have a giant party. Celebrating is important!

Do you recognize that slogan?

Kraft!

We got very good news. Yesterday morning, Kraft arrived with a generous donation. Very generous!

$100,000 worth of food was donated to The Salvation Army and three other Irving charities.

(side note: The donation was part of Kraft's sponsorship of the Texas Stadium implosion in April.)

We can not be more thrilled with the food and know it will help us feed more people in the community. Thank you, Kraft!

An 'Ex-Seeding' Summer Day Camp Part II

Last May, we highlighted The Salvation Army Irving Summer Day Camp project: growing a garden!

Recently, we went back to see how the children are doing– and we are excited to share the project is ‘ex-seeding’ everyone’s expectations.

So far, the children have grown squash, tomatoes, and carrots. The best part… they donated the entire fresh produce back to the center’s food pantry program!

Captain Kettle Meets New Officers!

Fit for Life at The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Community Center

Charles Haley, the only five-time Super Bowl winner in the world, worked with kids on fitness at a “Fit for Life” event last Thursday, July 1st. Fitness stations included football passing, weight training, running on treadmills, jumping rope, and running an obstacle course.

Did you know?

The U.S. Surgeon General says health risks among children from low-income families may be 50% greater than for other youth. Experts recommend that children participate in 60 minutes or more of physical activity every day to combat obesity and to promote good health. Obesity places children at an alarmingly high risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, musculoskeletal problems, asthma, injury, behavioral issues, and low academic achievement. Offering additional places for physical activity, or increasing access to such places, can result in a 25% or greater increase in the percentage of people who exercise regularly.

Along with the workouts, children got free food and learned more about the center’s physical fitness opportunities: football camp; basketball programs, the Larry North satellite fitness center, and an aerobic workout room. Plus, they had the opportunity to enroll in the fall football program and the cheerleading program.

Celebrating Love in the Midst of a Disaster

Salvation Army DFW's very own Frank and Bera Calvert celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on June 30th while heading to South Texas to help with Hurricane Alex. The Calverts are disaster relief specialists and were part of the team that was recently deployed from Fort Worth.

Instead of celebrating in the traditional way. The Calverts prefer putting their compassion into action to help others.

This is the second time they have worked a disaster with The Salvation Army on their anniversary. The first time, they didn't tell The Salvation Army officer it was their anniversary because they were concerned he would not let them go, and would insist that they stay in town to celebrate their special day.

Update: Tropical Storm Alex

On June 29th, The Salvation Army DFW deployed a mobile feeding unit (canteen) from Fort Worth to Austin, ulitmately to be sent down to San Antonio.

Salvation Army officer, Lieutenant Correira, is stationed on this mobile feeding unit. Read his personal update about the current conditions and how the Army is responding to this tropical storm.

"The Salvation Army Fort Worth canteen has spent the morning purchasing supplies and coordinating with The Salvation Army Austin Disaster Response Team. At this time we will be heading to the Mobile Task Force staging area at the National Guard Armory for inspection and await deployment. Spirits are high and we are ready to respond! We are prepared to feed up to 750 meals working with The Salvation Army Austin canteen."

No child should go with out food is the mission of the Amadi Grace Foundation. The foundation's "Summer Food Program" wants to make sure Lewisville children do not have hungry tummies!

To help the foundation achieve their goal, they are partnering with The Salvation Army Lewisville Social Service Center. The center opens its doors to provide an air conditioned facility for people to enjoy their meal. And of course, everyone is greeted by smiling faces.

Children ages 1 - 18, along with adult supervision, can enjoy a delicious and healthy meal.

Free Breakfast from 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.

Free Lunch is available Noon - 1:30 p.m.

You might remember, The Salvation Army in Lewisville is busy passing out snack bags to day labor workers in the community. The program is still going strong and every morning workers eagerly wait for The Salvation Army van to arrive with breakfast pastries (generously provided by local Starbucks!) and cold water.

That’s what the children have learned to say in the Summer Day Camp at The Salvation Army Oak Cliff Community Center. This year’s Summer Day Camp theme is all about teaching children about the different countries around the world.

For the first week, they kicked off the camp by learning about Mexico and its culture.

Children have learned basic Spanish words like hello and goodbye; along with learning how to count one to ten.

This art project was a “treat”. What’s the perfect craft to make when studying Mexico and its culture?

Two words can sum up all the fun at summer day camp at The Salvation Army Northside Community Center…

Field Trips!

The summer is action packed with lots of field trips planned for the boys and girls.

Jeanetta Searcey, director of child care, at the center explained that for many of the children, the field trips are once in a lifetime opportunities.

The Summer Day Camp kicked off this week with its first trip. Children learned about “Making Fresh Traditions” by touring Mrs. Baird’s Bakery.

Nothing beats the smell of fresh-baked bread and it was a wonderful learning opportunity…

The Children loved learning how the company makes bread and got to take away some of Mrs. Baird’s famous donuts! Yum…

After the field trip children enjoyed playing outside, making crafts, and eating snacks!

The Salvation Army believes that is important to celebrate a person's success. Recently, we honored, Arielle James, recipient of The Salvation Army Project Tomorrow scholarship. James is graduating from Tyler Street Christian Academy.

Meet this outstanding graduate and read her bio!

My name is Arielle James and I just graduated from Tyler Street Christian Academy (TSCA). In 7th grade, I received the Project Tomorrow Scholarship from The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Community Center, which helped me to attend TSCA. I really liked going to school there and over the years, I played basketball, cheerleading, and track. But, the thing I liked most about TSCA was the teachers! They made the biggest impact on me. IF it was not for my scholarship, I would still be at my other school and would not be prepared to go to college. Next year, I am going to Tuskgee in Alabama and I'm very excited.

Forced prostitution and forced labor is the new slavery!

That's what Alesia Adams said when she spoke at The Salvation Army’s Human Trafficking Forum at The Salvation Army Mabee Social Service Center on Thursday, May 20th.

“As a descendant of slaves, I’m not going to see that happen to anybody,” said Adams, who is The Salvation Army’s Coordinator Against Human and Sexual Trafficking for the southern territory of the U.S.

During the forum, Adams talked about how America's sexually oriented culture desensitizes people toward sexual exploitation.

Stop! Desensitizing?

Think about the different messages we receive through music, entertainment, and advertising.

Deena Graves, Executive Director of Fort Worth-based Traffick911, gave a great example at the forum...

"The show 'Pimp My Ride' has glamorized the word 'pimp' and made it a verb," Graves said. "If you want to make something sexy, you 'pimp it.'"

The idea that being a pimp is something cool contributes to a perverse, cultural mindset that helps fuel the growth of commercial exploitation within the U.S. boarders.

But, it's not cool. And The Salvation Army believes it is important to bring awareness, so people can be free and their lives can be restored.

Let's talk about what is going on at the local level....

Did you know, the National Human Trafficking Hotline receives more calls from Texas than any other state – and 15% of those calls are from Dallas-Fort Worth.....

And it appears that the targeted victims of sex trafficking are predominantly children and teens. In Tarrant County, the average age of entry into prostitution is 14...

Local awareness is critical!
We encourage everyone to bring individuals, churches, organizations and law enforcement agencies together to create a community-wide effort in stopping human trafficking.

CVS / Caremark Pitches in at Casa Youth Shelter

More than 60 CVS Caremark Operations Excellence and Retail Pharmacy colleagues spent some time helping out recently at The Salvation Army’s Casa Youth Emergency Shelter in Dallas.

OE leaders and Retail colleagues pitched in on everything from landscaping to cooking hamburgers and hot dogs for the kids at the shelter, which provides a safe 20-bed haven where runaways and troubled youth can stay for up to 30 days. During their time there, boys and girls ages 10 to 17 experience daily living in a household setting with assigned responsibilities and duties.

“This was a phenomenal day,” said Melvin Traylor, Executive Director of the shelter. “We want the kids in transition here to feel safe and secure. Having a facility that is well kept up and looks nice helps promote that sense of security.

“I can’t begin to tell you how thankful we are to have had CVS Caremark out here.”

Colleagues spent just two hours at the shelter but got plenty accomplished, cleaning out two storage sheds, assembling three picnic tables, hanging a new volleyball net, hanging curtains, organizing the clothing closet, trimming hedges and mulching all the flower beds, painting throughout the building, assembling a new cabinet for the gaming system and cooking and serving dinner to the residents and staff.

OE colleagues donated almost $1,000 for the event, which was used to purchase mulch, tools, picnic tables, curtains, curtain rods, the new tv cabinet, a game table and chairs for the rec room and a new volleyball net and ball for the shelter.

Kickin' It

The game of soccer in Pleasant Grove is something that has bound the community together. Saturday afternoons, families gather to cheer on their children, cousins, friends, and classmates as they take on the Gators, Mavericks, or Real Madrid, to name a few! Excitement is high as spectators cheer to the sound of “GOOOOOAL” and enjoy refreshments from the concession stand.

Not missing from the cheers is Miguel, a proud parent of his kids, Aaron and Samantha. Samantha and Aaron are playing their third seasons with The Salvation Army’s Victory soccer program, but this year, there is a twist – they are on opposing teams. Miguel was asked how he chooses which team to cheer for, and he stated “I cheer for both sides!” But what if Samantha and Aaron are in a face off?... “I cheer ‘Go Samantha!’… I want to encourage and motivate her.”

When asked if the “sibling rivalry” has had any impact on their relationship, Samantha replied, “It’s very difficult, but cool. It’s fun trying to beat [Aaron].” Aaron’s take on the competition is a little different, as he said with a wry grin “Playing against my sister is fun because I get to beat her team. We have a good relationship, so I can joke with her about winning.”

Now winning isn’t everything in the Victory Sports program. The first priority of the program is to teach the children teamwork and discipline. Volunteer coaches teach different skills and provide the kids with a safe, Christian environment where they can learn the game of soccer. Making friends and teaching respect is another focus in practices and games so the kids can take these skills with them into their regular life. And each practice and game players includes a time of prayer and devotion.

95 children strong, the Victory Sports program is growing and gaining greater participation from the community. With only six games left, everyone is excited to see how the kids and the program grow by next Fall! Check out our Facebook profile for more great pics of this program!

An ‘Ex-Seeding’ Summer Day Camp

Last summer, The Salvation Army’s Irving Summer Day Campers were featured here for raising money to purchase a goat for The Salvation Army in Kenya, Africa.

This summer, the children are eager to take on a new project, which they will spend part of their summer day camp growing a garden.

Pam Benton, community director at The Salvation Army in Irving, says the project will not only be a learning experience in how to grow fresh vegetables, but teach the children on ways to give back.

“Once we grow the vegetables, the children will be able to sell the fresh produce at a local farmers’ market, as well as a portion of it will go back to our food pantry,” Benton explained.

Recently, children had their first assignment in “tilling.” In order to prepare the ground, the children tilled the dirt to get it ready for seeding.

Did you know that throughout the U.S., children growing gardens has become a trend?

First Lady, Michelle Obama, is working with children to harvest a garden on the White House lawn.

Shopping Cheap Chic...

Wow! If you were not at the opening of the Chic Boutique located at The Salvation Army Warehouse in Dallas on Wednesday, you missed something....

Women waited in line for hours just to find a good deal on clothes, accessories, and even bridal dresses.

Meet Chic Boutique shopper, Emily Strechter, from Mt.Vernon, Texas.

Strechter, who is a bride-to-be, said, when she arrived at The Salvation Army Warehouse at 7 a.m. there were people already in line.

"I could not believe it" Strechter says, "I came here to find a good deal on a wedding dress and apparently I'm not the only one."

Stretcheris excited to be getting married next March and is looking for the perfect wedding dress.

"I'm crossing my fingers that I can find the dress," she adds.

"...Hopefully, a $3,000 dress that is on sale for $99!"

Angels Among Us at The Salvation Army Denton Annual Luncheon

The Salvation Army in Denton held its annual luncheon, Angels Among Us, at the Denton Country Club.
During the luncheon, guests enjoyed special music by Erica Laney. Laney is a senior at Guyer High School in Denton, and recently received an award for “Outstanding Musician” at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble competition.

Following the performance, guests were inspired by keynote speaker Johnny Jones. Jones is the head men’s basketball coach at the University of North Texas.

Jones spoke about his coaching experiences and shared how important each basketball player is on the team. He gave an example of he does not consider players as substitutes, but refers to them as “reinforcements” on the court. Likewise, Jones compared his philosophy to how The Salvation Army operates in the community – by being reinforcement in Denton.

Jones commented, "The Salvation Army does an excellent job at making a difference in Denton by turning peoples'people's lives around. The Salvation Army is the angel among us."

The Salvation Army Dallas Women’s Auxiliary held its annual Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Brook Hollow Golf Club on Tuesday, May 3rd.

Before watching models walk the runway and dining on an exquisite lunch, women shopped the Chic Boutique, hoping to score labels like Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Versace, and Gucci. Proceeds from the Chic Boutique benefits The Salvation Army DFW programs and services.

Salvation Army Event at Korshak Featuring Renowned Jewerly Designer Coomi

The Salvation Army Dallas Women’s Auxiliary 2010 Fashion Show and Luncheon is almost here…

But, before models walk the runway, and ladies shop for cheap chic, the women gathered one more time, to support the upcoming celebratory event.

The host? Stanley Korshak.

Women gathered in the exquisite jewelry section in Korshak to shop and support The Salvation Army DFW’s programs and services.

Ramona Jones, Crawford Brock, and Billie Leigh Rippey

Korshak’s store owner, Crawford Brock, was ever so kind to offer to donate ten percent of every purchase made at the event to The Salvation Army.

Side note: Korshak is also donating clothes for this year's fashion show and will be providing volunteers to help in the Chic Boutique, a store-like area at the fashion show where guests can purchase donated fashion items. Thank you, Korshak!

A highlight of the event was the participation of renowned jewelry designer, Coomi, who flew in from New York especially for this event.

“Everything you see is like a history lesson because of the ancient techniques I use,” Coomi said.

“It’s all ancient craftsmanship that has been revived.”

That was the theme for last Tuesday's exclusive event held at the Valentino boutique at the NorthPark Center in Dallas.

Side note: You might remember last week's blog post, ladies from The Salvation Army Dallas Women's Auxiliary brunched at Lilly Pulitzer and shopped the boutique's latest summer clothing line. A portion of the sale proceeds benefited The Salvation Army.

Back to Valentino.

The event, spearheaded by Charlotte Jones Anderson, Karen Jones, and Lori Jones, was a success. Of course, we can not fail to mention and say thank you to Valentino for generously supporting The Salvation Army. 10% of the proceeds from this event benefited our local programs and services.

Charlotte Jones Anderson remarked how lovely the turn out was.

"The evening was a special event for the ladies to come together and support The Salvation Army."

When asked to describe Valentino clothes? "Beautiful!" she replied. "Valentino clothes are so refine and ladylike."

Michelle Witten, wife of Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, simply described the clothes in one word, "lush."

Witten also commented, " I am blessed to give back and encourages all women to give back, as well."

Juddy Gibbs, Salvation Army DFW Advisory Board Chair, remarked, "The Salvation Army is exemplary in helping so many people through orgnizations, multiple programs, and services." And while shopping she added, "Valentino's clothes are simply beautiful."

If You Give a Kid a Camera

Every afternoon, nine-year-old Jaylon walks from his elementary school to The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Community Center. He says he has been coming to the center for two years.

I asked him what he likes most about going to The Salvation Army during after school hours. He said, “hanging out with his friends and shooting hoops!”

I asked Jaylon to be our guest photographer for this blog post. His assignment was to capture all the things he sees happening around him. He could also use Captain Kettle as a prop.

By the end of the session, Jaylon not only grasped how to properly hold the camera, but starting taking really good pictures. He said that he wants to be a police officer when he grows up, but I think he might have a future in photography.

Raise awareness: Children!

Last summer I had the opportunity to spend some time with children who were attending the summer day camp program at The Salvation Army in Irving.

The children at the day camp were challenged to raise money to help The Salvation Army in Kenya. (I blogged about their success- click here to read the story.)

Shortly after my visit, I reflected on how the children’s lives were changed by going to the summer day camp. You could see their faces full of joy and could tell how much The Salvation Army DFW really cares about children.

I've got good news! We offer more than just summer day camp.

Through our programs like sports clinics, music lessons, after school care, homework tutoring, and character building courses, the children are inspired, encouraged, and most importantly, shown Christ’s love.

Take a look at these precious faces. These pictures document all the wonderful things children get to do at a The Salvation Army DFW center.

I’m asking the folks who care about children to make it a point to raise awareness.

Zig Ziglar may have said it best. “Our children are our only hope for the future, but we are their only hope for their present and their future.”

What can you do?

1. Tell everyone you know that helping children is a cause you really care about.

2. Regularly post updates on your Facebook/Twitter page that raise awareness about The Salvation Army DFW’s children’s programs.

3. Volunteer to help/mentor/ teach children at a Salvation Army DFW center.

The Family Life Shelter at The Salvation Army in Arlington

The staff at the Family Life Shelter is exceptional. I went by to visit and see how they are fighting hunger.

Meet Michael. He's the cook at the shelte and is a very funny guy. Michael really enjoys his job because he gets to help people every day.

The shelter serves three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. On average they serve about 75 meals a day.

Families staying the shelter, along with children in the after school program, have the opportunity to enjoy a

healthy and delicious meal.

The salad bar offers lots of fresh fruits and vegetables!

And this little girl is ready to enjoy her burger and fries!

Read a short testimonial from Melissa. Melissa and her children have been staying at the Family Life Shelter for a few weeks. She says, she is grateful the shelter provides meals for her family.

"Being able to have dinner as a family is the most important thing.

The shelter allows us to sit down and enjoy a meal together."

Garage Sale Benefits Food Pantry

Through out the past few months, The Salvation Army DFW has been highlighting hunger in the community. We are passionate about putting an end to hunger. You might remember the blog post about The Salvation Army in Lewsiville providing snack bags to people in the community. If you don't, click here to read the post. It's a good story!

While The Salvation Army in Lewisville is doing a tremendous job at passing out snack bags, they are struggling to keep their food pantry full. On an average day, they give out 40-50 bags of groceries. The Salvation Army could really use a boost in food and / or monetary donations.

To help restock their food pantry shelves, the center is holding a garage sale on Saturday, April 17th, from 9a.m. - 2 p.m..

Sheila Skipsey, The Salvation Army Lewsiville director, says all proceeds raised from the garage sale will benefit their food pantry.

"We really need food," Skipsey says. "More people are coming to us who need our help."

Last month, Captain Kettle made his debut at The Salvation Army in Plano ... and now he's back!

This month, Captain Kettle visited The Salvation Army in Garland. And, wow! He had a good time.

He said hello to Major Branscum....

Captain Kettle was delighted to hear how well The Salvation Army was helping people through their food pantry program.

He spoke with Joann Welk, social worker, and she told him in February they helped 581 families with grocery assistance and passed out 4,648 loaves of bread!

"One of the best parts of my job is seeing the smile on children's face when I give them a bag of food," Welk said.

Sorry - It's been almost a week since our last update. The Salvation Army DFW has been very busy. Doing what? We had our inaugural Doing The Most Good luncheon in Fort Worth!

The event was a huge success, and we are so thankful for Wendy Davis, the luncheon chair, and The Salvation Army Ft. Worth advisory council for putting on an excellent event. Coach Gary Patterson, TCU head football coach, was the keynote speaker, and he did a great job! Visit The Salvation Army DFW's webpage to read more about the event .

On to other news, an update on The Salvation Army's work in Chile....

Salvation Army officers are continuing to work around the clock. Pump and generators are now installed, which helps provide clean water. Boxes of milk, pasta, rice, sacks of potatoes, disposable diapers, blankets, bedspreads, and sheets are being passed out to people. Salvation Army Responds to Devastating Earthquake in Chile

It's sad to think that last month the world mourned for the people of Haiti after they experienced a catastrophic earthquake with a magnitude 7.0. And now, the people of Chile, just experienced a devestating 8.8 earthquake.

When the news broke early Saturday morning, February 27, it was devestating to hear that nearly two million people were affected and now displaced.

Luckily, The Salvation Army has made it easy to give through there text messaging campaign.
A person can text the word "CHILE" to 52000 on their cell phone and make a donation of $10. Your 100% donation will go to aide the people affected by this tragedy. (side note: the donation appears as a charge on your carrier bill and standard rates may apply.)

Major Kelly Pontsler, an American Salvation Army officer serving as the Army’s Public Information Officer in Haiti, shares stories of people linked to The Salvation Army’s emergency relief effort in the nation since the devastating January earthquake:

1. JEAN ROBERT BERNADIN

WHAT do you do when life as you know it is brought crashing down? The testimony of Jean Robert Bernadin is that you have to keep going. The earthquake that ripped through Port-au-Prince on 12 January took Jean Robert’s wife, mother and livelihood but he refused to give up and now he is helping The Salvation Army to provide relief aid to many thousands of fellow-Haitians.

Jean Robert was employed by the United Nations but when the UN facilities in Port-au-Prince were destroyed, his job went with them. Not a man to sit on his hands, Jean Robert headed to the airport compound in Port-au-Prince to look for work. It was there that he met the Salvation Army logistics team. Still wearing his UN identification, he was taken on for a day’s work, moving goods. His focus and work ethic were evident from the start and one day quickly became two, then three.

Jean Robert describes the change in his circumstances without self-pity or anger. Work, he says, is therapeutic. He doesn’t intend to forget the past, he misses his wife and mother immensely, but his focus is on the future. Now the sole provider for two teenagers and an infant, he knows he has a job to do – to raise those children and raise them well. And he will do whatever it takes.

Jean Robert has now joined The Salvation Army’s emergency response team as an assistant for logistics. His good nature, skills and leadership ability have made him indispensable on the ground. And the relief work of The Salvation Army is better because of Jean Robert.

2. ‘DORA’ AND ‘BOAZ’

The resilience of children is remarkable. Judging from the smiles on the faces of two small girls currently living in the Salvation Army compound in the Delmas 2 area of Port-au-Prince, life is fine – and yet, taking a quick glance at their surroundings, it’s hard to imagine how they can be so cheerful.

Last Saturday was distribution day. A joint effort between The Salvation Army and World Concern delivered hygiene kits and water jugs to the 3,200 registered families living in the camp adjacent to the Army’s property. As there was an abundance of helping hands available to distribute the goods, I stepped back to observe the bigger scene.

The day was warm and the Salvation Army compound was dusty, as usual. Human waste and other debris continues to pile higher every day in the trench that cuts through The Salvation Army’s property. The stench is overwhelming. The courtyard of the former divisional headquarters compound has become a tent city, housing people forced from their homes by the earthquake. Sanitation is modest – a bucket of water is still a luxury.

In the midst of this live two girls aged six and three years. Last Saturday they wore stickers with cartoon characters on their clothes as they ran and danced and laughed in the bright sun. One had a Dora the Explorer sticker and the other wore a Bratz sticker. We couldn’t get them to tell us their names so we used their stickers as inspiration and called them Dora and Boaz, which seem to please them! Oblivious to the smell, unconcerned by the distribution across the way, these girls were full of life. Conversing interchangeably in French and Creole, they had much to say in between bursts of laughter.

I played with ‘Dora’ and ‘Boaz’, took photos and enjoyed some girl talk as their families looked on with broad grins of approval. Who knew that such a huge pocket of joy would be found inside a dusty compound that day, bundled up in the form of two little girls?

What the future holds for these children remains to be seen. But for one brief moment on a Saturday afternoon they had no cares in the world. Nor did I.

Boy Scouts scout for food for The Salvation Army

On Saturday, February 20, the Boys Scouts souted for food all across the DFW Metroplex to help fight hunger with The Salvation Army DFW.

The end result?

Over 30,000 cans and boxes of food was collected! The food was distributed to the following Salvation Army Centers:

Salvation Army Responds to 3- Alarm Fire in Irving

The Salvation Army responded to a three-alarm fire at the Chaparral Creek Apartments located on O’Connor Road.

Volunteers from Box 4, a non-profit organization that offers aid to Dallas Fire-Rescue and fire departments, served food and beverages from The Salvation Army Disaster Relief canteen.

Ken Johnston, Box 4 volunteer, restocks cups of water for the firefighters.

Salvation Army Disaster Services was immediately onsite to offer their services.

An estimated 10 galloons of Gatorade, 150 cups of coffee, and 50 cups of hot cocoa were served to nearly 50 firefighters.

There is a new member of The Salvation Army family.

As part of a new series in our blog, once a month Captain Kettle, The Salvation Army red kettle, will visit a Salvation Army DFW Community Center to see all the great things that are happening.

Before we see where Captain Kettle visits first, here’s a quick look at the history of the red kettle:

It all started in 1891… Captain Joseph McFee wanted to help the poor people in San Francisco, but he did not know where to get the funding for his project.

Captain McFee's idea spread, and in 1890, a nationwide effort was able to fund 150,000 Christmas dinners for the poor.The following day, Captain McFee placed a pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing. Beside the pot was a sign that read "Keep the Pot Boiling."

He was able to collect enough donations to have a Christmas dinner for the people in need.He remembered, during his early days as a sailor in Liverpool, England, seeing a large kettle called "Simpson's Pot" where passengers of boats tossed coins to help the poor.

And that is how the red kettle started!

Without further ado, allow me to introduce Captain Kettle.

The Salvation Army in Plano!

Captain Kettle checked out the center’s food pantry and what did he see?

…The Salvation Army Plano keeping busy by providing bags of groceries to clients in the community.

In January 2010, 447 adults and 351 children received assistance from the food pantry, of the total 321 people were first time recipients of the service.

A total of 544 bags of groceries were distributed to people in need in the Plano community.

Stacy Koster, Salvation Army Plano social worker, says it’s unreal how many people they are assisting with food pantry requests.

“It makes me really sad. No child in Plano should go hungry,” Koster said.

The Salvation Army’s food pantry in Plano is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. - noon and 1- 3 p.m.

Meet Mr. Harry - Salvation Army Food Pantry Volunteer

With our continuing focus on hunger and The Salvation Army programs that help fight hunger, food pantries, serving meals, and passing out snack bags, you can’t help but wonder who the people are behind our programs.

Meet Mr. Harry.

Mr. Harry is a faithful food pantry volunteer at The Salvation Army in McKinney.

For the past five years, every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 – noon, Mr. Harry volunteers in the pantry. He organizes and restocks shelves, and bags groceries to pass out to people in need. He says he is passing out grocery bags to 10-15 families per day and the family size can vary from a single adult to a family with eight children.

Working with groceries is not new to Mr. Harry. He has worked at and managed several grocery stores for more than fifty years. After retiring he felt God calling him to volunteer, so he went to The Salvation Army in McKinney to find out how he could help.

“A few weeks after expressing the interest in volunteering, the Corps’ officers called to tell me they could use my help in the food pantry,” Mr. Harry said.

Having experience working in a grocery store was a plus, so he knew the volunteer job would not be too difficult. But, in his new volunteer role at The Salvation Army he was eager to do something more than just hand out food.

“The volunteer position allows me to meet new people and hand out bags of food but, more importantly, to offer to pray with the people that come in,” Mr. Harry said.

“Sometimes I see single moms crying because they are so happy to receive food that will feed her and her children.”

On Mr. Harry’s desk is a printed copy of the scripture verse Isaiah 53 from the Bible. Harry accepted the Lord into his life in his mid-forties, and he says it is never too late for someone to know Christ.

Sadly, this will be Mr. Harry’s last week volunteering with The Salvation Army in McKinney. He will be relocating to Las Vegas, NV to be closer to his family. He says that when he gets settled into his new routine, he may look for opportunities to volunteer at The Salvation Army there.

He credits God’s timing in all of this as he has found a volunteer replacement, Mr. Gary.

Mr. Gary is eager to start volunteering and is most excited about meeting new people.

"People are important,” Mr. Gary says.

“It does not cost anything to be nice to people.”

Lewisville Leader News: New program pulls the community together

During the past few weeks at The Salvation Army DFW, we have been talking about hunger in the community.

Unfortunately, hunger has become more prevalent in our community during these difficult economic times. The Salvation Army in Lewisville is being proactive on this issue, by going into their community to pass out "snack bags".

Through this program, The Salvation Army Lewisville is not only feeding more people, but they are building relationships with the people in need.

Earthquake in Haiti Leaves Major Devastation

Haiti government officials estimate 500,000 people could be dead from Tuesday's 7.0 earthquake.

Since 1950, The Salvation Army has been working in Haiti and currently has 45 primary schools that serve more than 10,000 children daily, two clinics and a hospital, two children's home, feeding programs, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment projects.

The Salvation Army has responded immediately to the earthquake in
Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.

It's a New Year... Focus on Food!

While some people are focused on eating healthy, cutting back on calories, and trying to lose a few pounds this New Year, other people are wondering where their next meal will come from.

The Salvation Army DFW wants to make sure that no one in the Metroplex will go hungry. With the start of the New Year, let’s focus on food and help feed families in need!

Here are some ideas how you can help feed the hungry….

1. SHOP - Next time you are at your local grocery store, pick up a few additional canned food items and drop them off at your nearest Salvation Army center.

2. DONATE – Make an online donation. Did you know you can make an online donation in honor of someone?

3. FOOD DRIVE – Looking for an exciting project? Hold a food drive for your company, your Sunday school class, or maybe for your child’s school. Make it into a friendly competition to see who can raise the most food.

4. VOLUNTEER – Volunteer to feed the homeless at a Salvation Army shelter. Nothing is more gratifying than helping someone in need.

Feed the hungry. Change a life.

Bell Ringers Clown Around....

Linda and Vic Morin, from Plano, recently volunteered as bell ringers outside Fry's Electronics off of Highway 75 and Plano Parkway.

The couple decided to get creative and dress up as clowns. This put shoppers in a good and giving mood!

Celebrity Angel Tree Adoption!

’Tis the season! As part of holiday tradition and a commitment to the Dallas community, Josh Howard, forward for the Dallas Mavericks, adopts 100 angels from The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Angel Tree. Howard will provide Christmas gifts to all the adopted angels.

Howard grew up in a neighborhood similar to Cedar Crest where he was active at his local Salvation Army community center.

Howard and the Dallas Mavericks have given back to The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Community Center by renovating the center’s basketball gym.

The Salvation Army is getting ready for Thanksgiving Day! This year, we will feed more than 2,000 people in the DFW Metroplex. The meals will include turkey, dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes, yams, fresh rolls, and pumpkin pie. Sounds delicious!

Former Dallas Cowboys' Celebrate Salvation Army Comets' Homecoming

A few blog posts ago, we highlighted The Salvation Army Cedar Crest’s football and cheerleading program.

This past weekend, the program celebrated homecoming. In honor of the event, former Dallas Cowboys’ players Charles Haley (1992 -1996); Kelvin Edwards (1987-1988); Erik G. Williams (1991-2000); Russell Maryland (1991- 1995); and Dixon Edwards (1991-1995) signed autographs and took pictures with the children.

Haley, the only man in the world with five Super Bowl rings, says the sports program teaches children how to work as a team and develop leadership skills.

“Without sports, children miss out on what teamwork and friendship really means,” Haley said.

Nordstrom Rack Giving Back!

A group of employees from the Nordstrom Rack in Plano spent Monday, October 19th at The Salvation Army in Plano, creating Angel Tree kits. This activity is part of their United Way community service contribution. Each year, Nordstrom stores across the nation spend one day giving back to their local community by volunteering.

The Plano Nordstrom Rack assembled 2,500 Angel Tree kits, including a bag to hold the gifts and an Angel Tree information sheet.

Nordstrom Rack Store Manager, Casey Aur, says she has personally participated in the Angel Tree program each year by adopting an angel, but she never knew what all is needed to make it successful. She found the volunteer opportunity inspiring.
“Nordstrom is known for exceptional customer service and this starts by having your employees work together as a team. That is what makes our store successful,” Aur said.

“It’s exciting that today, that a group of our staff can come together as a team and give back to The Salvation Army. It’s amazing how much volunteer work we will do today that will benefit Angel Tree.”

This year, The Salvation Army will assemble an estimate 60,000 angel tree kits. Salvation Army Angel Trees will be available, on November 13, in 10 malls: Collin Creek, Golden Triangle, Irving, NorthPark, Valley View, Hulen, Northeast, Ridgmar, Grapevine, and including Galleria this year!

Comets Football at The Salvation Army Cedar Crest

The Salvation Army Cedar Crest, located in Southeast Dallas, helps children score big in many ways. The center provides a well known football and cheerleading program. Not only is the program successful in teaching children skills on the field, but it also is great at teaching children life skills.

For many children growing up in this neighborhood, a life exposed to drugs and gang (street) violence is all too common. Some of the children do not come from a stable background. By offering football and cheerleading practice three times a week, and football games on Saturdays, children and their parent’s can easily become involved in a more positive experience. On any given Saturday, more than two hundred people come to the community center to participate or watch the football games during football season.

Sergeant Rodney Hinkle, officer at The Salvation Army Cedar Crest, says the program is a win for the parents and the children. The coaches mentor the children and keep in communication with the parents. Over the past few years, the sports program has developed into a successful community tradition. “Parents in this area know that we offer the best alternative activity that will keep their children safe and teach them skills they can use on and off the field.”

Meet seven-year-old Jederek, who plays on The Salvation Army’s Comets football team.

Jederek, who aspires to play like Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber, knows that grades matter. The program's rule is, no pass no play. “We check their grades,” assistant coach for the Comets said. “If a child is not passing his classes, then we are quick to help him with his grades." Jederek says he understands the importance of getting good grades. “I am getting good grades and it makes me happy to play."

Next, meet Salvation Army’s Comets cheerleader, Tyranisha.

Tyranisha’s mother, Tiffany, is a single mother living in the Cedar Crest neighborhood. She says her daughter looks forward to the weekly practices and cheering for the Comets. “The program teaches my daughter about team work which is an important skill, plus she has fun,” Tiffany said. Tiffany’s oldest daughter was once a Comets cheerleader, too. “My girls love cheerleading here. This program is definitely known in the community,” she said.

Because of the success of this program at The Salvation Army Cedar Crest Community Center, the lessons Jederek, Tyranisha, and other children are learning will help them and hopefully change their community. The Salvation Army is teaching the young, aspiring football players and cheerleaders how to be disciplined and how to work with other people. “These skills will help the players throughout their lives,” Hinkle said.

VHA's back...

Round two! Employees from VHA, a nationwide network community-owned health care system, came back this year to volunteer again at The Salvation Army in Irving. Volunteers planted flowers, tidied up the children’s playground, and sanitized toys. VHA, headquartered in Los Colinas, commits one day a year to volunteer at a local community nonprofit for “VHA Community Day.”

Lorraine Jenks, VHA employee and coordinator for the volunteer project, says VHA Community Day is a way for the company to give back to the community and was excited to be back at The Salvation Army. “Volunteering at The Salvation Army and other non-profits, shows that VHA cares about the community and we want to make a positive impact,” Jenks said.

A Field Trip to the Kimbell Art Museum

Children attending the Northside Community Center’s After School Program have a distinct learning advantage by participating in the center’s cultural program. Each month a cultural activity is offered. Through this opportunity the children can continue to increase their knowledge while outside the classroom.

Recently, the children and staff ventured down to the cultural district in Ft. Worth. Their destination: the Kimbell Art Museum. The museum is an exceptional place for the children to visit and learn interesting things, while in a new environment.

After being greeted by the museum’s docents, the children began their tour. Their first stop was the Asian exhibit.

Inside the Asian exhibit, the children watched a film installation called, “Arhat Taming the Dragon” by Phillip Haan. Several children did not understand why they were watching a movie in an art museum. Joann, the museum docent, explained that the movie is a piece of art about art.

Next, Joann led the children to the Egyptian exhibit, were they studied Egyptian mummy sculptures. While looking closely at Pharaoh Amenotep II, the children learned why ancient Egyptians made mummies. Joann explained that Egyptians believed that if a person was wrapped like a mummy after dying, the person could still spiritually live and later come back in another life.

The final observation was paintings by Henry Raeburn and Frederic Lieghton. To quiz the children, the docent asked what they noticed about the people in the paintings.

The children immediately guessed, “They have fancy clothes on!” Their thinking caps were on, and the children had learned that in the seventeenth century, only wealthy people were able to afford portraits.

Surveying the children’s faces, each child had learned something new that day. Their knowledge of art and culture had been expanded. Here’s what three children said about what they learned.

Paityn, eight years old, says, “I liked the Mummies! They were really old.”

Noah, ten years old, liked the paintings. “I learned something new and it was really cool.”

Zanadra, eight years old, enjoyed the Asian exhibits. “In the movie, the dragon means it will be a storm. It is helpful to the people.”

Closing the tour, Larry Logger, another docent said it best about their trip. “The children not only learned about different cultures, but they learned that in art, an artist is always telling a story, and the viewer is to look for clues - unusual clues.”

Why Graduations Matter

At The Salvation Army DFW, we believe that graduations matter. It is important to celebrate a person's recovery and the progress made in their life.

This past week, The Salvation Army in Fort Worth honored three individuals for successfully completing one of three programs: First Choice, a residential chemical dependency rehab for mothers with children; the Simon Program, a program for men and women with a dual diagnosis of chemical dependency and mental health issues; and START, an intensive residential case management for single, homeless men and women.

By reaching this milestone, the graudates have demonstrated that they are now ready to re-enter society. They will be moving into their own apartments free of drugs, alcohol and homelessness with the tools to help them remain stable citizens of Fort Worth.

Meet graduate Tanya Phillips and read her story.

Tanya Phillips' six-month-old son was removed from her custody by Child Protective Services due to her drug addiction. Three days after enrolling in The Salvation Army’s First Choice program, CPS reunited Tanya with her son. In the First Choice program, she received group therapy, individual counseling, transportation assistance, and child-care, as well as a room of her own and meals. On April 16, Tanya began school to become a medical assistant. On August 28 -- one year to the day from when she regained custody of her child -- she signed a lease and began moving into a two-bedroom apartment. "The Salvation Army helped me build up a support network, rebuild my family relationships, and believe in myself," Tanya says. "They helped me to strive for success and achieve my dreams.”

It was great to see many people attend and celebrate this special occasion.

How ’Bout Them Cowboys

Football season has officially started and The Salvation Army DFW could not be more excited to see America’s favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys, in action.

Not only are the Cowboys doing good things on the field, but they are also doing great things off the field. The Salvation Army DFW is thankful to the Dallas Cowboys for supporting us.

In honor of October being National Hispanic month, last Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and the Dallas Cowboys Youth Football Academy Coaching Staff conducted a football and cheerleading clinic for the children at The Salvation Army in Pleasant Grove.

The children were very excited to interact with coaches and cheerleaders. Looks like they had a lot of fun!

His vision… His vision of "the possible" placed him ahead of his time, and his talent for creating opportunities to help others and improve his community became a legacy of service passed on to succeeding generations of the Collins family.

Antrainer said each day of the promotion one Blue Velvet cupcake will have a silver star hidden inside and will win: one-dozen Blue Velvet cupcakes, a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the new Cowboys Stadium for two, and a Dallas Cowboys ball cap and t-shirt.

The cupcake looked too delicious, so we immediately asked a customer if he would try one! Doug, from Dallas, said it was fantastic. When we explained the special promotion and that 100% of the proceeds go to The Salvation Army, he said, "Wow, three great teams: Cowboys, Sprinkles, and The Salvation Army!" Thank you Doug for being a taste tester.

After the taste-testing session, Antrainer took us behind Sprinkles' closed doors to see where the magic happens. Each day 1,000 cupcakes are made from scratch--everything is fresh. With the special Cowboys promotion, Antrainer hopes the number of cupcakes sold will double. Here are a couple of pictures of the cupcakes being made.

Blog Spotlight... The Salvation Army Oak Cliff Community Center's After School Program!

A few blog posts back, we featured The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary giving away backpacks and school supplies to children in the DFW. It is hard to believe that school is back in session and we have no doubt the children are enjoying their new backpacks and supplies.

Once school starts many parents wonder where their children can go during after school hours. The Salvation Army offers great places for children to hang out after school. Throughout fall, we will highlight the different Salvation Army after school programs. This week on our blog, we will focus on The Salvation Army in Oak Cliff. The community center offers a wonderful after school program which emphasizes academic tutoring and music lessons.

Denisse Gaytan, The Salvation Army Oak Cliff After School Facilitator, said the program is exactly what parents in the Oak Cliff community need.

“The area where the children go to school is a highly targeted for crime,” Gaytan said. “We go to the schools and pick the children up, so parents do not have to worry about their child walking in dangerous neighborhoods.” Once the children arrive, they are given a healthy snack and spend time working on their homework. “We offer the best tutoring program,” Gaytan said. Many of the children’s parents only speak Spanish, which can be a challenge in helping their child with homework.

In addition to the tutoring, the children will soon be able to take music lessons. Captain Candee Elias, Salvation Army Oak Cliff officer, says the new music program will be a tremendous benefit to the after school participants. “When a child learns music, they learn also learn how to concentrate and focus better,” Elias said. “Through learning music, they will learn many additional skills as well."

Children Helping Children!

Recently, the children who attended The Salvation Army in Irving summer day camp, raised money to purchase goats for The Salvation Army in Kenya! By participating in a variety of fundraising activities from car washes to cleaning up several neighbors' yards, the children raised $313!

Can a goat really help someone in Kenya? Yes! Goats nourish hungry children and families with healthy milk, cheese, and yogurt. Goats also give a much-needed income boost by providing offspring and extra dairy products for sale at the market.

The children were eager to present their hard-earned check to Major Brenda Raymer. Major Raymer will send the money to a Salvation Army officer in Kenya, who will purcahse the goats for a family in need-- see video below of Salvation Army officer and goat recipient!

The Salvation Army Dallas Women's Auxiliary hosted a Back to School Bash at the Dallas Aquarium. It was a huge hit!
